How to romance Crake (Marat): Distant Shadows and A Closer Look
Updated September 14, 2026
In this guide
Start here
Crake's reported romance is in A Closer Look, after Distant Shadows. Join the Manumits, investigate with him, take the personal conversation opportunities and follow up promptly when he leaves the hideout. Later sources disagree about which earlier intimacy choices are necessary, so this guide gives the recommended path without claiming every alternative is safe.
Join the Manumits
Reach the reported Notorious threshold.
Protect Crake during the investigation
What Hunts the Night, then What Moves the Dead
Check his personal request
Review the entry conditions at the hideout.
Follow Distant Shadows
The detailed quest interactions stay folded.
Follow up promptly
A Closer Look and the personal conversation

01Meet the Manumits and reach Notorious infamy
The familiar introduction runs through The Firebrand and Shadows in the Woods: investigate Vlad's hut or help him, follow the Mert lead, then meet Sara and Crake. PC Gamer also reports a direct visit to the Manumit hideout in Svartrau, which skips introductory scenes. Those scenes should not be mistaken for universal romance prerequisites.
To advance the alliance, reach Notorious, the fourth tier in the Court menu's infamy track. PC Gamer's dedicated Where Loyalty Lies guide points to boyar operations, soldier camps and pickets, and boyar defeats as ways to build infamy. At that tier, meet Sara in Svartrau and continue the alliance investigation.
- Use the Mert guide if the mill or prison investigation is your current obstacle.
- Infamy IV is the reported joining threshold. It is not evidence of a hidden maximum-infamy requirement for the later romance.
02Investigate the church and escape in What Hunts the Night
Report the scouts' discoveries to Crake, then meet him and Sara at St. Teotim's Church in the Middens at night. The investigation leads to the churchyard monster and an ambush.
- Use Focus Mode on the stains and wing, then inspect the belltower doors. Defeat the monster and inspect its remains.
- Stay with Crake during the escape and clear the enemies blocking him. At the locked gate, cross above it with Shadowstep and clear the other side so he can pass.
- In the refuge afterward, ask about Sara, recognize that he is upset, share your experience of loss and offer to talk about the people you have both lost.
- Take the personal conversation as the recommended route. PowerPyx's author now connects it to later optional quests; earlier romance reporting describes it more loosely as an optional intimate moment.
03Find Silas's trail and rescue Crake
What Moves the Dead begins with Mevasser. Inspect the four details in the woodcut, then ask the woman with the dog about Silas. Her short account supplies the location; the longer version is not necessary for that clue.
- At the house near the stone arch, let Crake open the door. Inspect the wall, chimney and nearby floorboards, then move the basement shelf to reach the ruins.
- Find the laboratory note and follow the footprints deeper inside. Inspect the body and paper near the lantern.
- When Crake is taken, follow the blood trail with Focus Mode. Defeat the enemies, including the murohn, and lead him out.
- Offer to accompany him to the hideout and help with his wound. PowerPyx recommends this sequence to open Distant Shadows; keep a save before the closing conversation.
04Secure the Distant Shadows conversation
The reports disagree here. Polygon calls escort and wound care optional; PowerPyx recommends them and reports possible refusal when approaching later. Its maximum-infamy explanation is speculation.
Take the earlier personal conversations and accompany Crake home as the recommended route. This does not establish that every alternative fails. If you already left, ask about his personal request at the hideout and check whether it is offered.
- PowerPyx lists What Moves the Dead as the prerequisite, not Who Pulls the Strings.
- If he refuses, preserve your save. An earlier save lets you compare the personal conversations; grinding an unverified affinity target is not an established fix.
05Observe Ascar, report back and offer to follow Marat
Reveal choices and consequences
Visit Ascar's hut beside the beehives on Tantari's south side during the day. Some guides spell his name Askar.
- Through the east window, inspect Ascar, the dog and the wooden horse. Follow him outside, hiding behind the cart near the hives.
- Follow behind the barrels along the path, then the cart near the shrine. In the woods, follow the snares and hide behind the tree.
- At the soldiers' encounter, observe or intervene. If you intervene, defeat both soldiers and finish talking to Ascar.
- If spotted earlier, return to Marat: detection ends surveillance without failing the quest.
- Return to Marat at the hideout; he leaves angrily regardless. Tell Drogos “I'll go talk to him.” Leaving Marat alone does not unlock A Closer Look.
06Find him south of Svartrau promptly
A Closer Look is time-sensitive. PowerPyx's September 8 walkthrough reports failure after one in-game day, expressed there as sixteen time segments. This is that guide's reported cutoff, not an official universal timer formula or a countdown read from your save. Go to the marked area south of Svartrau as your next priority.
Polygon warns against doing the personal branch after starting Rise at Dawn, while PowerPyx's A Closer Look page mentions a location marker when Rise is already active. The compatible planning advice is to settle the personal branch before progressing that finale. Starting Rise alone is not sufficient evidence here to declare an existing A Closer Look save unrecoverable.
07Hear him out and return the kiss
Reveal choices and consequences
Hear Marat's disclosure, reassure him that your opinion is unchanged, then return his kiss. The separate A Closer Look guide below traces the conversation.
08If the personal route is missing
First distinguish an unoffered Distant Shadows, an expired A Closer Look and a dead character. They are different problems. A missing personal request is not fixed by checking every political quest in the planner, and an unchecked checkpoint does not establish that a game branch failed.
Crake is human; Polygon reports low-blood nighttime conversations can kill him and warns against abandoning him in the Middens escape. If he died, use a save before that event to pursue the romance. If the timed follow-up expired, return to a save before the deadline. For an unexplained refusal at the hideout, the sources leave some entry conditions unresolved; the recommended earlier conversations are a replay path, not a proven repair for the current save.
