Check a skill's unlock requirement, point cost, time cost and form before buying it. Swordmastery, Witchcraft and Vampirism share progression resources, but opening an ability can also require a manual or vampire progression. A useful early upgrade should solve a problem you have already encountered.

01Start at a shrine and inspect the requirement
At a Road Shrine, choose Perks to open the learning interface, as shown in GamesFuze's illustrated guide. The official Skills & Power bulletin confirms shared experience and skill points across the trees; learning also requires time.
- Inspect the ability before confirming an upgrade.
- Identify the missing requirement: points, time, a manual or progression in Vampirism.
- Check the effect and form restriction, then decide whether you will use it in the next quest.
02Find the right kind of manual
Official guidance points Swordmastery learners toward soldiers, bandits and fencers; Witchcraft manuals are associated with ruins, haunted locations and magic practitioners. PC Gamer reports that Anca becomes a manual vendor at Crossroads Inn after Echoes of Silenced Bells.
For an early example, the Charge manual is a reward from Like Father, Like Son. PC Gamer also locates Swiftness in the bandit-camp chest northwest of Stoneward Post. Its effect rewards a Perfect Block with faster attacks, making its value depend on whether you use that defense successfully.
03Choose a purpose before a build label
Our recommendation is to choose between an action you need and an action you already perform well. If you need an opening, inspect an available control ability. If you reliably Perfect Block, a bonus triggered by that action is easier to use than one whose trigger you rarely meet.
Check exploration uses too: PC Gamer describes Mercurial Fervor as briefly slowing the surrounding world for exploration. A combat-only ranking would miss that purpose. Compare the written effect with your next obstacle before spending points on a familiar name.
04Equip it, then reassess after the next encounter
After learning an active ability, set it in the Active Abilities tab; GamesFuze distinguishes this setup from passive perks. Try it and ask whether you used it, could afford its cost and benefited from its trigger. Then decide whether another upgrade improves that plan or a different tool addresses the problem.
