Start by defending reliably, then turn a clear opening into an attack or active ability. Direction and timing matter, but manual directional input is not the only supported control style: the official overview also describes adaptive omniattack and omniblock.

Practice one exchangeA recommended training loop built from the combat actions described below.
  1. Read and defend

    Watch direction and timing.

  2. Answer an opening

Try a short attack, then defend again.

  3. Build Activation Charges

    Attacks, blocks and parries contribute.

  4. Choose an active ability

Check its purpose and return to defense.

Still taking damage? Change one part of the exchange.

01Choose controls that let you read the enemy

If choosing an attack or block direction overwhelms your first fights, review the combat controls and try the adaptive option. The official features overview presents that as a supported playstyle. If you prefer manual direction, practice against one opponent before trying to manage several attackers.

02Separate the direction from the timing

For manual defense, read where the strike is coming from and respond in that direction. PC Gamer's playthrough tip uses the shield indicator turning orange as the Perfect Block cue.

Our practice loop is to defend a few attacks first, then add a short response when you recognize an opening. If you keep taking damage, change one thing at a time: the defensive direction, when you press, or whether you are attacking through the enemy's response. This makes a failed attempt informative.

03Build a charge, then choose its purpose

The official reveal describes successful attacks, blocks and parries building Activation Charges. These power active abilities; they are not earned only by dealing damage. Its examples include a damage-over-time hex and a physical finishing attack.

  1. Inspect an unlocked active ability to see its effect and availability in your current form.
  2. Use it for a recognizable purpose, such as sustained damage or an opening, rather than spending a charge without checking the target.
  3. Return to defense after the action. Do not assume the ability ends the enemy's attack sequence.

04When health drops, change the exchange

Shorten your attacks and recover a defensive position instead of repeating the same trade. Review health, stamina and available recovery before attempting the encounter again.

If the obstacle is input complexity, revisit adaptive controls. If it is an unavailable ability or an ineffective loadout, use the skills and day/night guides. If hunger is limiting your nighttime recovery, check that system before another attempt.
